The truth about carbs

Carbs: hero, or villain? If it’s a question that leaves you feeling confused, you’re not alone, as the results of a recent YouGov poll commissioned by Slimming World revealed. The survey showed that 81% of people either thought it was a myth that starchy carbohydrates should be the main source of calories in a healthy, balanced diet, or weren’t sure either way, while 66% had heard that low-carbohydrate diets are better for weight loss, and 35% had heard that it was impossible to lose weight without cutting carbs.

At the same time, the survey revealed that low-carbohydrate plans cutting out potatoes, pasta and bread are difficult to follow, with 46% of those who had tried a low-carb diet reporting often feeling hungry, 40% feeling limited in what they could eat, and 30% finding it a way of dieting that’s just plain boring.

So, what a relief to discover that, based on thorough reviews of current scientific evidence, both the World Health Organisation and the U.S. government say that carbohydrates have an important role to play in a healthy, balanced diet.

“For years now we’ve been bombarded with anti-carbohydrate messages,” says Dr Jacquie Lavin, head of nutrition and research at Slimming World, “and in particular, there is a deep-seated misconception that people should avoid carbohydrates when they’re trying to lose weight.

“Yet the truth is, carbohydrates play an important role in a healthy diet and sustainable weight loss—and the current carb confusion is damaging to the U.S.’s obesity problem,” says Dr Lavin. “A diet to aid weight loss needs to be healthy and balanced. It should give people the freedom and flexibility to enjoy a healthy balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat, and it needs to be sustainable for the long term.”
