Ace…a backyard BBQ
The key to staying on course at the same time as enjoying summer social events is planning ahead. Barbecues often take a while to get going, so filling up on something healthy before you set off means you’ll be less likely to start on the crusty bread and creamy dips as soon as you get there. You could also help out the host by taking along dishes of your own, potluck-style—there are loads of filling options to choose from when you’re following Slimming World’s flexible Food Optimizing eating plan. Rice, potato, and pasta salads packed with vegetables are great, as are corn on the cob, skinless chicken breasts, lean steak, homemade burgers, or fish to put on the grill.
Ace…a family day out
So, you’ve got a car full of over-excited children and you’re heading to a theme park for the day. While there’s not much you can do about the queues for the rides, you can make the most of your time in between. Skip the buses, monorails and moving walkways, and explore on foot instead. You could even download a free activity tracking app on your cell phone and see how many steps you clock up—you’ll probably be amazed! Food-wise, taking a Food Optimizing picnic in a cool bag will save you money as well as support your slim down. Try Slimming World frittata, hard-boiled eggs, lean deli meats, pasta salads, veg sticks with homemade dips, and fresh fruit, such as strawberries or blueberries.
Yes, you can rock Food Optimizing at a festival! Especially if you’re camping and can take your own stove—in which case bring weight loss-friendly food you can simply heat up, like canned spaghetti or vegetable chili. And when it comes to ordering from the food vans, these days you’ll be spoilt for choice. Opt for baked potatoes with beans (no butter), or non-creamy vegetable curries, sushi and tomato-based pasta dishes. As well as seeking out the healthier food stalls, do lots of walking between the different stages—it means you’ll catch more bands, and get some exercise at the same time.
On such a joyful occasion, it’s traditional to push the boat out. With a plan of action in place, though, you can join in the celebrations while keeping your weight loss progressing. Start the day by enjoying a hearty Slimming World breakfast before the wedding (there can be a long wait until lunch while the photos are taken)—think potato hash and fried egg, or scrambled egg with smoked salmon. As people will be drinking during the day, have a strategy around alcohol, such as alternating each drink with a glass of water or diet soda. When ordering your tipple, avoid anything creamy and opt for single-measure spirits with diet mixers or white wine spritzers—they last longer and are more refreshing than wine. At the buffet, opt for lean meat, fish and seafood, dressing-free salads, and fruit, if you can. Or, if it’s a sit-down meal, don’t be afraid to ask for any sauces or dressings to be served on the side. That way, as well as raising a glass to the happy couple, you’ll soon be toasting a slim new you, too!
